A very competitive, and high-quality season wrapped up March 28. Thanks to all curlers for bearing with us, and an unwieldy 9 team loop – we’re hoping to get at least 12 teams next year as there certainly seems to be lots of interest coming out of teams here for the GCCC classic, mid-season joiners/spares, Wednesday morning and Friday night players, and hopefully some we haven’t met yet!!
The Championship Final saw the 1st and 3rd place regular season teams teams square off. Mike MacKeil, brother Steve, Ted Wellwood, and Nolan Osborne had won the pennant with a 13-3 mark, but were certain to be tested by Courtney Hanham’s 11-5 crew (hubby Steve, Mark Crozier, and Jeff Sibley). As is their nature, MacKeil team started slowly, and trailed 4-0 after 3 ends; they took one in 4th, but gave up a pair of singles to trail 6-1 after 6, and the fat lady was warming up her larynx. But then the smelling salts kicked in – Mike made a Homan-esque split against one to score a brace in 7th, they now trailed 6-3 coming home without the hammer. There was a lot of rock traffic around the center line in front of the house, and some came into play, as the Hanham team attempted to remove stones, they twice jammed opponents into rings, and MacKeil was sitting three, with some cover when it came to Skip stones. Mike’s first was a lukewarm guard, then Court’s draw was a bit heavy. Mike made a gorgeous draw around the cover to lie 4, with 3 bunched in the 4 foot.. This left Courtney with a very delicate draw attempt around a guard that would also require very good weight / sweeping control. But it was a touch light, and overcurled onto cover – a steal of 4 and a very improbable, yet impressive comeback win for Team MacKeil ! Congratulations !
